A good friend of mine recently asked what Linux distribution he should start with to learn Linux. This is probably the most common question seen in every Linux community for the past x years, and if you’re interested in Linux at all, one that you’ve probably asked yourself at one point. Rather than answer the question, I’m going to write a blog long, drawn-out blog post.

In this post we’ll cover why there are different distributions to begin with, what are the differences/similarities between them, and why it’s difficult difinitively state which distro someone else should use. Hopefully, I can give you the information needed to make an educated choice on your own. As someone who’s been using Linux for years, but only just started daily-driving, I also hope to give you an unbiased opinion on why you should or shouldn’t switch to Linux full-time.

We can’t discuss distributions without covering the invention of Linux, but I’ll try to keep this part short.
